A basic sentence, which consist of a subject and verb, is the simplest form of structure in the English grammar rule. Sentences can also have an object besides the subject and verb. For example, The man (subject) ate (verb) a sandwich (object). All of the words in a sentence are classified according to their purpose and meaning, which is referred to as parts of speech. The parts of speech is broken down into eight categories: nouns (countable or uncountable), adjectives (comparative or superlative), articles (definite or indefinite), verbs (transitive or intransitive), adverbs, gerunds ("-ing form of a verb used as a noun"")
