Unit two has taught me how to look at a sentence and identify and classify each word using the parts of speech. Common parts of speech that were discussed include: nouns, adjectives, verbs, articles, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions. Many of these parts of speech also have further classifications, such as transitive and intransitive verbs, depending on what kind of meaning or information the word intends to add to the sentence. As a native English speaker, these rules and classifications are not something that I am concious of while writing or speaking but it is important to understand the parts of speech as an English teacher because it will help me to explain sentence structure and grammar to my students who are not yet familiar with them.
