The parts of speech are one of the most basic areas in grammar and yet can be a daunting task to teach and, especially, learn. The most probable reason for that is the sheer amount of classifications that they can be broken down into, each group with a Name that is a chore in itself to remember. Many native speakers of the language seem to possess an innate ability to use them correctly and differentiate the right ones from the wrong, but this is most likely due to the experience they have with using them. A through breakdown starting with the 8 parts of speech and then delving into the intricacies of each would serve as the backbone of a grammar-centric course. Of course, this unit has been as a great refresher for me personally as well.
