While many of my students find this kind of basic grammar boring and tend to ignore it, I think that there really is a basic understanding that is needed both to speak the language well and certainly to be able to use the language at a higher level if the students so choose. I was taught a very practical knowledge of grammar both in my elementary school days and in my linguistics courses and it is something that has proven very useful for me as I compare English with other languages in a quest to learn more. Even though much teaching theory is moving away from a structural approach and more towards and experiential approach of teaching (Learning from context, experience, student-based rather than teacher-based, etc) I think that this is an important topic that should not be overlooked. This unit was both an interesting reflection and review course for me as well as a confirmation of the importance of this topic.
