Most of what I learned from this course is how much I don't know about my own language. Many of the units having to do with grammar weren't new to me, but it's been so long since I had to learn the material the first time, it might as have been new. I know about prepositional phrases, subjects, predicates, and the past tense, but the modal auxiliary verbs, past participles, future perfect conjugations, and other subjects that delve deeper into the english language aren't things I think about on a day to day basis. You seem to learn a lot more when you trying to teach the material and become aware of your personal limitations. Also, it became apparent to me that many of the things I say aren't all the way correct. "Can I go to the bathroom?" now seems a little less eloquent than "May I go to the restroom." Just knowing the different between one little word can make a big difference in a sentence. Grammar is a big weakness that I have and there is a lot still to be learned and I want to work to learning it. I know that will make a big difference in the classroom. Before this course, I thought of teaching english as a way to get away and see the world. There would be work to do but most of what I was concerned with was to get out there and see new things. Now I know that there is more to teaching english and many people's lives can be bettered through my teaching. If someone wants to get a better job, a promotion, or just communicate with old friends, english can be the solution they are looking for. If I am going to become an english teacher, I know that I will have to be committed, because there might be a time that someone can have a better life from it. Being an english teacher is seeming more and more honorable as I learn about it. And although there will be people who aren't always motivated to learn, it will be my job to show them the benefits of the english language and urge them to keep learning.
