Teacher as a Key Person in the Classroom Environment

Teacher as a Key Person in the Classroom Environment | ITTT | TEFL Blog

English teachers have a significant role to play in a classroom. They are involved in engaging students to maintain a focus on the language. However, the major roles of the English teacher in a classroom are classified into five premium categories. These categories involve their roles as a controller, organizer, assessor, participant, and a helper (Keller, 2016). This essay aims to highlight the role of English teachers in the classroom.

Controller

As a controller of the classroom, an English teacher is the one who instructs the students that when they need to perform certain tasks such as study. The English teacher should involve the students in speaking English during the class but when it is only asked to maintain balance and control. The way and type of English will also be controlled by the teacher. The teacher must provide sufficient time to the students for speaking and being involved in the English conversation to better provide the lessons and concepts by maintaining an adequate balance and control (Flood et. al., 2013).

Organizer

Being an organizer, an English teacher has a challenging role to play in the classroom. The teacher must know how to play the class-game well to make the students involved in significant learning. For example, if the teacher wants to start a new English chapter in the class, he or she should discuss it with the students and try to ask students first about the topic. In this way, a path will be organized in an adequate way to teach the subject.

Assessor

English teachers being assessors need to acknowledge that this is the most important part of their profession. The assessing can be divided into two categories which include correction and feedback. During the learning and study, the teacher should use significant approaches to correct the mistakes of students by appreciating them to turn it even better. However, when the work is finished, proper feedback for improvement should also be provided to them (Harmer, 2013).

Participant

This is an interesting role of the English teacher in the classroom. Students learn more when they feel that the instructor is friendly and supportive. The teachers here need to participate in the class the same as the students. When a teacher participates in the class with full energy, the ability of students is also increased to desire more knowledge. Participation is highly significant in teaching English because it increases the chances of learning the language better (Correa & González, 2016).

Helper

An English teacher also plays his or her role as a helper in the class. This role can easily be played by the teachers when they help the students by providing them supportive tools to understand the language. The tools may involve effective dictionaries, adequate resources to learn more, and some sort of video tutorials. This helps the students significantly and they learn the things in the class at a high level (William, 2013).
