English may not be the most spoken language in the world, but it is the official language of 53 countries. It is the first language of nearly 400 million people and the second language of another 300 million people. Furthermore, 750 million people are learning English today. It is expected that half of the world’s speaking population will be proficient in English by the year 2050 (Hargraves, 2003). There is no other existing language that this high volume of people tries to learn it as a foreign language.

Being able to speak English is not just about being able to communicate with native English speakers, it is the most common second language in the world. If we want to speak to someone from another country then the chances are that we will be speaking English to do this.

English is the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism. In this era, English is considered as the global language, since it achieves the official position and education preference in every nation, and it is used by more people than any other language. Knowing English increases one’s chances of getting a good job in a multinational company within the home country or abroad. It is also the language of international communication, the media, and the internet.

As technology advanced, the use of the Internet, Mobile phones, and Emails became very important for both daily life and professional life. The main language used throughout the world on the internet is English. An estimated 565 million people use the internet every day, and an estimated 52 percent of the world’s most visited websites are displayed in the English language. Learning English is important as it is access to over half the content on the internet. Knowing how to read English will allow people access to billions of pages of information that may not be otherwise available. In this term, English has ushered in a new world where English communication has become a necessity to stand out in the world of competition (Education First Report, EF).

English is the leading business language and it has become almost a requirement for people to speak English if they are to enter a global workforce. Research from all over the world shows that cross-border business communication is most often conducted in English and many international companies expect employees to be fluent in English. For most important job positions, effective English communication is one of the most important requirements that most of the companies seek for (Nishanthi, 2018). In today’s world, professional life became very difficult for those who aren’t comfortable conversing in English.
