The Best Thing I've Learned From My TEFL/TESOL Course with ITTT

The Best Thing I've Learned From My TEFL/TESOL Course with ITTT | ITTT | TEFL Blog

I decided to complete TEFL course nearly a month ago. Before talking about the reasons why I took this course, I would like to tell some facts about myself. My name is Julia, I was born in Kyiv, Ukraine and had been living there for all my life – now I’m 35. I had a very successful career in marketing an worked for a big international company. However, the job took up all my time, required a lot of effort and I felt very exhausted and unhappy. So I decided to quit my job and started to travel: Georgia, Italy, Spain, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore. Now I live in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Asia is a flourishing market for EFL teachers

Learning English is extremely popular in Asian countries. The demand is so big and the teacher salary is rather high – so many foreigners take up this job with a great pleasure. Teachers of English as a second language get lots of advantages – the main one as for me is an interesting and challenging job that you can plan by yourself.

You get to decide where you want to live, how many hours to work, online or offline and many other options. This job is also very important to society – speaking a foreign language gives a lot of opportunities to communicate with people from other countries, it allows you to travel and even to find a well-paid job. English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, so if someone can speak English, it broadens their communication opportunities greatly.

Non-native English teachers need to be TEFL certified

While many schools prefer to hire teachers from English speaking countries, there are still many vacancies for non-native speakers. In this case, getting a TEFL certificate is really important.

To be honest, I thought it would be quite formal and easy for me because my first education was “Foreign languages” and I had 2 years’ experience of teaching English in Ukraine. In fact, it was really useful. I really liked learning about the ESA methodology as it’s the perfect way to teach and motivate students. So I’m absolutely satisfied and would strongly recommend other people who want to work as ESA teachers to study and get TEFL certificate.

If you want to be a really good teacher, knowing the language is not enough – you should know how to give your knowledge to other people in a simple and engaging manner, motivate and involve them in the study process. It’s not only about speaking and explaining – but mainly about making your students motivated and confident to use the language. And when you achieve this result it’s a great pleasure.

Actually this is the best I've learned from my ITTT course. You get the basic knowledge of teaching and then improve it every day in your work: be creative, search for new ideas, get feedback from the students and analyze what can be improved in your work. This process never stops and that’s amazing.

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires” William A. Ward.

Thanks for this great experience!
