One of the most important things I have gained from this course is a re-familiarization with english grammar. After a life-time of speaking english, I have done so almost intuitively without a real awareness of its grammar. Now that I am familiar with the terms, forms, usages, and rules behind different grammar points, I'll be able explain to my students how to use them.
Another important thing that I have taken from this course is the 3-stage learning process: engage, study, and activate. I have already put into practice this 3-stage method in the classes I am currently teaching. It's important that the students are able to apply newly acquired knowledge in different ways: to speaking, to writing, and to actually thinking in english.
The tefl course has helped me realize the importance of organization, of pre-planning lessons, and of building each lesson off the previous one. The tefl program emphasizes student-based learning, which I think is the most effective way to teach. It's important that the students needs and wants are recognized and attended to. Really, the teacher's main objective is to be kind, encouraging, and someone who serves to kindly push their students in the right direction.
