I decided to study a tesol course in order to have a further skill that could be used as a backup plan in case of career changes in this turbulent economy. Originally it was not going to be something that I would necessarily put into immediate action. However, as the course has progressed I have formulated a few plans which might mean that it will be used sooner rather than later. It was during the course and what I have personally gained for studying it that this has now come about. Probably the most important things that I have benefitted from in this course are: • Understanding your students. assessing and knowing the needs of the students is probably the most important first step in providing a successful course. • Planning. Planning the contents of the course ahead of time and including everything from resources (activities, materials, DVDs, CDs, course books and any other visuals that will be used in the course) to individual lesson plans. • Monitoring progress, evaluating and testing. In order to provide feedback to the student as well as myself it is clearly important to be able to assess how well progress is made. This could be to fine tune the remainder of the course as well as help to design future courses. • Everything changes. There is no fixed lesson that will work every time. Students are different and teachers are different. The ability to see how best to change and redesign work as a course proceeds is essential in maintaining a happy and successful student. I would now see myself far more confident in taking on a teaching role and more so related to businesses and companies. I think there is a demand within companies to improve the levels of english used by staff, especially when dealing within international companies. I would like to put what I have learnt into practice in several ways. Firstly, I would like to provide english classes within a business which can be tailored to their specific needs. Secondly, I would like to work with marketing departments in order to help with correct use of english in marketing material.
