I am currently coming towards the end of my first year as an esl teacher, working for TLG in Georgia, Eastern Europe. I was very much thrown in at the deep end when I started - the school I teach in is in a remote mountain village and does not have a great deal in the way of resources that go beyond the text book. As such I have been forced to create most of my own teaching material, drawing on my previous experiences as a youth group leader for ideas when I needed different ways of teaching. I feel that this course has helped me in 3 key ways. The first is in how I structure not only individual lessons, but also how I plan for lessons that are 2 or 3 weeks away. When I first started I was planning lessons around categories of vocabulary on a weekly basis (this week we're going to learn about food etc.) but now I am more focused on the key areas of grammar and build the vocabulary around this (and my students have improved a lot as a result). I also feel that the way I teach grammar has improved significantly - previously it was mostly board work with speaking and writing practice thrown in but now I am experimenting with some of the games and exercises detailed in this course. The final way in which I feel this course has helped me is in teaching lower level students. I am generally very comfortable teaching high school age kids (12-18) as this is the age bracket I have worked with in youth groups in the past, but when I was assigned to teach 4 and 5 year olds as well things got a little more complicated . The materials in this course, especially in the early units dealing with identifying and teaching different levels of students, helped me to gain confidence in teaching this class and understanding the best methods of doing so. I fully intend on continuing to pursue a career as an esl teacher and travel to other countries and I understand the different places have different issues when it comes to learning english. Studying and completing this course have given me new skills and ideas as well as helped me to enjoy my new career even more than I already did and I will definitely be referring back to my notes a great many times in years to come.
