This course has been harder than I had anticipated primarily because as a native english speaker the complexity of the language is usually not analysed, we simply take it for granted. As children we are taught how to put these random words together to make a coherent sentence yet seldom do we question the format of this application and ask why its structure is so? I had no idea about past continuous, modals, passive voice etc. etc. I know how to use it but dissecting each sentence to find out what each part was before putting it together confused me. An easy sentence correction, which I could identify the mistake and correct suddenly became difficult because now I'm analyzing each component singularly. The above has merely helped highlight issues that if I found this hard as a native speaker, I therefore need to tackle teaching english with a lot more patience, sensitivity and steady pace. Pronunciation and spelling is also of utmost importance-I remember as a child it took me time to learn certain phonetics and with lots of patience I was soon able to beat my sister at scrabble! (Needless to say if the word is not pronounced correctly, it will be spelt incorrectly). I liked the fact that the course used many different teaching methods to cater for different learning needs but mainly because it was made fun…learning through play which can be in cooperated into all learning ages. To keep pupils engaged and involved it is essential to have a good lesson plan showing good time management skills with varied activities for it is very easy to be distracted and get bored if teaching style is being dragged with one activity. As a teacher one needs to experiment with ideas and lesson plans, styles, techniques, materials etc. you have to be dynamic and meet the needs of your pupils and that alone can be challenging and exciting. There is no one skill but a magnitude of skills and the success of your pupils is alone your reward…I'm looking forward to developing my skills as a tefl teacher both abroad as well as using these skills in my primary zone-Inner london schools both of multicultural and monolingual perspective.
