I have found the esl course personally beneficial to me in countless ways. Since this is my first exposure to tefl all the units contained valuable information which, I intend to use as reference material in constructing my lesson activities and plans.
I had no idea that to teach english to speakers of other languages one did not need to be bilingual. The tefl units explaining the use of physical gestures and voice intonation to convey meaning to the non-english speaking students was especially informative and I will implement many of these skills into my own classroom. The video showing a good esl instructor verses a bad esl instructor I found to be quite useful, as a modal, to develop my own physical and voice gestures to communicate to the students. The units covering the best methodologies for optimum student learning and classroom atmosphere gave me teaching ideas to utilize in my own classroom. I will create a relaxed, secure student atmosphere where student communication and high conversational time is encouraged. I also now understand the methods and techniques teachers use to understand the mechanism of learning a second language. This gives me a better appreciation of how the second language students grasp foreign language and how my teaching techniques work to submerge them into that language.
Learning how to form different types of EAS lesson plans has been very helpful to me. Preparing them has allowed me to visualize how the actual lesson will unfold in the classroom, and how to use teaching activities effectively. Understanding the reasoning behind the different types of EAS lessons including; the boomerang, patchwork, and straight arrow methods, and the activities suggested for the different stages is very useful to me. All the games, activities, teaching ideas, and student potential problems outlined in each unit will be utilized by me throughout my esl teaching career. The information on classroom layouts plans and how these affect teaching and learning is helpful and practical information, I can utilize in my classes.
I found the worksheets to be beneficial in pointing out the pertinent information within the unit that is important. My tutor, Peter was very prompt in explaining any concepts I had problems with. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the esl ITTT course, and would likely take another one.
