A keen knowledge of parts of speech is crucial when teaching and learning English. Although native English speakers have had English grammar naturally ingrained from an early age, English language learners will need their teachers to understand the terminology of grammar and be able to break down complex grammar into simpler structures. I am very well-versed in the intricacies of English grammar -- English language was my best subject throughout my K-12 education -- but I still learned some unexpected details. This unit helped refresh me on the parts of speech as my students will be learning them. Some of the subcategories were even new to me. Unit 2 was a general overview of the parts of speech needed to make basic sentences. It included the barebones of a sentence, but also included parts of speech that add detail to a sentence. As a native speaker, there are many things I would have overlooked while teaching these grammar topics because they seem innate.
