Being a native English speaker, I rarely ever consider the rules of grammar; I just know what sounds correct to my own ears. Yes, proper grammar is an important marker of language abilities. However, having a background in anthropology, this particular unit also reminded me that grammar is an indicator education and social status. If students learning English wish to eventually speak at the fluent level to native speakers, grammar is imperative. Besides recognizing its importance, this unit reminded me of the proper names of parts of speech that I myself had forgotten. Having a thorough knowledge of this subject matter will only serve to assist in my own teaching abilities.
