Parts of speech and sentence structure in English language can be a difficult endeavor to both teach and to understand. There are many subtleties and exceptions to what seems natural to a native English speaker that make it difficult to teach a non-native speaker proper grammar or to provide any definitive rules regarding the structure of English grammar. This becomes especially apparent with irregular verbs. When teaching grammar and syntax in the classroom, it is important to consider the exceptions as well as the potentially overwhelming nature of the language that result from the exceptions. Instead of attempting to show non-native English speakers a whole range of exceptions for a definite article, it is likely best to teach them at a slower and more manageable pace using only one or two examples per lesson and asking them to use it in a practical application. Overall, when teaching non-native English speakers about grammar, it is important to only present a manageable amount of information at one time.
