Interestingly enough after all these years of being a fluent English speaker and knowing when to use 'a or an' in a sentence, I was able to break down the parts easily to explain to a very young child or beginner of English the actual rule of using an Before a vowel, eg 'an octopus' and a before a consonant eg 'a dog'. This will make it so much easier for the children I teach from an asian background to use these indefinite articles correctly in spoken and written work.
