Teaching is a skill which requires a lot of patience and hard-work. Being a good teacher can be the most rewarding and exciting job in the world, however being a good teacher requires many things, such as effective classroom management, setting a good example, being compassionate about your work, setting some ground rules, having well defined consequences for the class and last but not the least and the most important of all Lesson Planning. Lesson Planning is a special skill that is learned pretty much the same way as other skills. Being able to create your own lesson plans means taking a giant step towards “owning” the content you teach and the method you use. Acquiring this skill is far more valuable than being able to use lesson plans developed by others. It takes thinking and practice to master this skill, and it won't happen overnight, but it is a skill that will help to define you as a teacher. Knowing “how to” is far more important than knowing “about” when it comes to lesson plans, and it is one of the important markers along the way to becoming a professional teacher. Students need to be motivated, to be exposed to the language and should have the opportunity to use it, then as a teacher one needs to make sure that all these factors come into play in the classroom. The most effective method for this based on the tefl course is to have the three main stages in your lesson plan which are the Engage , Study and Activate. In the tefl course training they taught us three different kinds of Lesson Planning. (1) Straight Arrow Lesson Plan (2) Boomerang Lesson Plan and (3) Patchwork Lesson Plan. All three have the same objectives, they just vary in terms of format or pattern. Planning lessons in advance, really help and there is no substitute for a well-prepared lesson built around your key objective. Getting your students Engaged and involved from the start can set a strong context for the rest of your lesson. This gets them over any inhibitions about speaking english in class and makes communication in the lesson much easier. Always have a clear objective for your lesson. Keeping the objective in a clear view will give a better focus on the task. Often it is better to practice one thing in several different ways than to keep introducing new elements through the course of the lesson. So keep your objective measurable and realistic to your student's abilities. Prepare plenty of paired or group work activities to ensure that students get plenty of communication practice, during the Study phase include reading, writing, listening or speaking tasks with related activities to the final Activate Stage. In the Activate stage, students should get a lot of opportunity to have free practice as this integrates the focus structure/vocabulary/functional language into students overall language use. The most important aspect of free practice is that the students should be encouraged to integrate language learned into larger structures. This requires a more of a “stand off” approach to teaching. It is often useful to circulate around the room and take notes on PAYAL KHEMLANI UNIT 20 : LESSON PLANNING (41) common mistakes. In other words, students should be allowed to make more mistakes during this part of the lesson. Feedback allows students to check their understanding of the lesson's topic. Feedback can be either done quickly at the end of the class by asking students questions about their target structures or can have the students discuss the target structures in small groups, once again giving them a chance to improve their understanding on their own. In general, I feel it is important to review your lesson plan and make sure that you meet your objective at the end of the lesson. Also, by following the lesson plan format it facilitates students' english learning on their own. The more opportunity for student centered learning, the more students acquire language skills for themselves. The golden key to successful teaching is to have an effective and well prepared lesson plan…
