The basic parts of speech were well-defined in this unit. The examples provided helped consolidate my understanding, and I was interested to learn the reasoning behind that instinctive feeling of: 'that looks wrong'. For instance, I had never considered the rules for ordering adjectives, or forming superlative and comparative adjectives. This unit confronted me with the underlying foundations of my mother-tongue, which I was not taught when I first learnt the language. Whilst I found the material interesting, and there were moments when the explanations provided enlightened me on my common practises, I remain dubious about the question of teaching English by method or by example. Understanding the parts of speech is obviously invaluable to ESL students, as their own first languages are likely to be more consistent with rules than English. However, as a first language, the existence of many exceptions to the rules and the convoluted nature of this viral language suggests that learning by example might be a more successful approach than by rules. I can certainly see why computer translators are programmed using that method!
