This unit reminded me that many different parts go into making sentences. As a native speaker, I can usually hear the difference between a sentence that is put together well and one that isn't but would have found it difficult to explain why.
This unit taught me the various names for different parts of the sentences including gerunds and helped to explain in simple terms the differences between the various types adverbs and pronouns. Understanding and knowing how to use various parts of the language and identify them is important to being a good English teacher. If I'm comfortable with the terms and usage I can more easily pass this knowledge on to the students and answer their questions.
It's just unfortunate that so many English grammar rules have exceptions or have no hard and fast rules. But that just means that, as a teacher, I'll have to find creative ways to make learning these exceptions interesting for the students so that they can still learn and use them.
