I have personally gained a better understanding of the english language and of teaching skills. As a native speaker, I know grammar intuitively, so I have never had all the verb tenses and such broken down for me before. It was quite interesting to learn about all the subtle differences between them. I have a new found appreciation for what english language learners have to overcome in order to master this complicated language.
I also have a greater respect for what teachers have to go through. Having to come up with all the lesson plans were challenging, and I really admire teachers who can keep coming up with creative and engaging ways to teach every day for the entire school year.
I plan to put what I have learned into action by teaching english abroad. Since I cannot move immediately, I want to volunteer at a local high school that helps immigrants learn english. Since I live in Hawaii, we have a large number of Asian and South Pacific immigrants who could really use the help in learning english to improve their job prospects. After I save up enough money, I hope to teach english in Southeast Asia.
