Nouns Name people, animals, places, things, qualities and states, the main Type's are common, proper, compound, abstract and collective. Nouns can also be changed into plural nouns which you generally do by adding an -s, if it ends in s, x, sh or ch we add -es to the end, if it ends with a consonant + y we change the y to an I and then add -es, if it ends in f we change the f to a v and then add -es. Also nouns can be divided into two groups which are countable and uncountable. Adjectives describe nouns such as people and things, we have comparative, superlative and possessive adjectives. Articles always preced a noun, they are divided into three types which are indefinite, definite and zero article. Verbs are doing words they are used with a subject to form the basis of a sentence, they are divided into five types which are action, state, auxiliary, regular and irregular verbs. Adverbs add meaning or information to the action, quality or state denoted by a verb, adverbs of manner, place, time and frequency modify verbs and adverbs of degree modify adjectives and other adverbs. Gerunds are the -ing form of a verb used as a noun. Pronouns take the place of a noun, they are four types which are personal, reflexive, relative and possessive pronouns. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other word in the sentence, we have three types of prepositions which are time, place and movement. Conjunctions join words or groups in a sentence. And Infinitive is to + the base form of the verb. The content of this unit goes to show how much we use parts of speech without knowing it.
