As a native English speaker, there are many things that we can say and distinguish as being correct or incorrect, even if we aren't consciously aware of the rules. In school, we learn about nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and verbs, but other parts of speech such as gerunds or the past participles of verbs are rarely taught in detail. I also learned how different parts of speech can be further divided into different types (for instance adverbs are classed by manner, place, time, degree, frequency, etc.).
