Each word in a sentence can be classified as a certain part of speech, depending on its purpose and the meaning it adds. Nouns Name people, animals, places, things, qualities, and states. There are common nouns (e.g. chair), proper nouns (e.g. Kendal), compound nouns (e.g. classroom), abstract nouns (e.g. happiness), and collective nouns (e.g. family). Nouns can also be plural (e.g. dogs). There are countable nouns (e.g. a car) and uncountable nouns (e.g. light). When the ?ing form of a verb is used as a noun (e.g. boxing is fun), it is called a gerund. Adjectives describe nouns such as people and things. They are often used in clusters, with the last adjective in the list being separated by the word ?and? (although ?and? can be left out for emphasis). There is a basic rule for ordering the adjectives (i.e. size ? age ? color ? material), but it is not exactly ?set in stone.? Adjectives can be comparative (e.g. smarter) or superlative (e.g. the smartest). There are only two types of articles: definite (i.e. "the"") and indefinite (i.e. ""a"" and ""an"")
