An appreciation of the importance of the ability to distinguish different parts of speech will go a long way in helping one's students become effective language learners and, eventually, resourceful self-teachers. This unit covered the basics of identifying a word's role in a typical English sentence.
When a student learns a new word for the first time (sees it on the board, notices it in a textbook, or encounters it when reading on the internet) he or she will not always be able to readily discern HOW it is used in a sentence. Knowing a word's part of speech enables a student to generalize it's use in future contexts; after all, our students are expecting to use what they learn in class at some future Date. As a learner of chinese I have found that dictionaries which contain detailed part of speech information are ALWAYS far more useful that those which don't list/contain that information.
