This unit is primary concerned with recognising and classifying parts of speech. There are nine main parts of speech. A noun names people, animals, places, things, qualities and states. Adjectives are used to describe nouns such as people and things. Articles specify grammatical definiteness of the noun. A verb is a ?doing? word and it is used with a subject to form the basis of a sentence. Adverbs add meaning to the action, quality or state denoted by a verb. A gerund is the ?ing form of a verb used as a noun. Pronouns are words used instead/in place of more precise nouns or noun phrases. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other words in the sentence. Conjunctions join words or groups in a sentence.
