I have learned a lot from this course on how to be an effective teacher. At first, I thought teaching was more about the material and the methods of executing the lesson however from this course I learned that it is much more psychological. Although execution is important, establishing good relationships with the students is pertinent to how well the students will respond to what they are being taught. So although it is always important to be prepared and know the material, I think the most valuable lesson I learned from this course is to be honest and treat students as individuals rather than children who need to be educated.
I plan on putting what I’ve learned into action by making sure that I establish a good rapport with the students in the beginning. First impressions are important because they are lasting throughout the term. Rather than just being nice, I hope to display myself as fair, understanding, and genuinely interested in their well-being, especially when it comes to their english studies. In order to do this, I will have clear rules and expectations. Therefore, students should have no doubt why they may be punished or praised.
