english as a foreign language is more important today than ever. As technology makes travel and interactions across borders easier, effective intercultural communication is necessary. However, translation and multilingualism cost time and money; such costs could be avoided by using a single language spoken and understood by people throughout the world. Scholars agree that english has taken is becoming this language in most or all fields that require communication across cultures. Besides facilitating international diplomacy and tourism, english as a global language is needed to expand businesses and share scientific knowledge. Although many regional lingua francas, or contact languages between people who do not share a first language, have existed throughout history, english is the only one to have become truly global. The spread of english across the globe began with the expansion of the British Empire. Its real dominance, however, began after World War II when the united states was the only major global power whose economy and infrastructure was still intact and functioning. The Allies and the rest of the non-Soviet world relied on the united states to help rebuild their own states, and english was the clearest way to communicate with the newborn superpower. Additionally, American soft power and its associated language began to spread at the beginning of the twentieth century with the invention of automobiles and the development of the movie and music industries. The invention and growth of the Internet in the united states, along with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, also aided english to its current status as a global language. Although many tourists, including myself, have witnessed to some degree the extent to which english is used globally, english has also become especially important for international business and science. The Internet and post-Cold War globalization allow scientists to be informed about the most recent research and to publish their own findings for international recognition. With much of the research in science and technology carried out in the 1950s and 1960s conducted and recorded in english, the pattern continued with an estimated 85% of all scientific and technological information in the world written and/or abstracted in english by 2001. With so much research recorded and available only to those who can read english, anyone who wants to participate in furthering scientific knowledge has to at least be able to read and understand english to access past research on their topics. Then, in order to publish their findings, they must either pay for a translation or know english well enough to write at least their abstracts in english. A knowledge of english is necessary function in the international scientific community. english has become just as vital to international business. The Internet provides the knowledge about potential customers, regional trade agreements, and the growth of global markets—knowledge necessary to become globally competitive. Having a common language allows business planning and transactions across borders to be conducted more efficiently, removing the time, money, and deeper understandings lost to translation processes. Today, most scholars and business people are in agreement that english has indeed become the official lingua franca of international business discourse. One important marker is the decision of several large foreign multinational corporations/companies, such as Nokia of Finland, Philips of the Netherlands, Airbus of france, Fast Retailing of japan, and the South Korean LG Electronics to use english as their official corporate language. english has undoubtedly become the most common means of intercultural communication in today's globalized society. Although a variety of historical factors contributed to its growth, American power following World War II and it continued soft power, especially in the form of the Internet, have played the biggest roles in spreading english. Scientists from all parts of the world must know english to make sure they take the most recent research into account and in order to become more widely recognized by other scientists gathering research. In business, english has become a tool necessary to stay competitive in an international market. With english playing such a prominent role in these two domains, it is no surprise that so many people all over world want to learn the language.
