My general understanding of the english language has been massively improved. With regards to grammar I now feel capable of imparting information to a class. Although I will certainly need to assistance of coursebooks in this regard, I will be comfortable in answering most questions that students might have. The course has also given me good reference material (which I have collated in my own notes) that I can fall back on when I am unsure. With regards to planning lessons the course has given me a good structure. My first couple of real life lessons were done from scratch without a coursebook. Although they contained lots of material, they were a bit random and unstructured. The course emphasised the importance of coursebooks (supplemented by the teachers own exercises) for new teachers which I now realise is very true! I am teaching exclusively 1-1 classes so the advice about those in the course were useful. As mentioned in the course, many student want pure conversation lessons but I am supplementing this with vocab and grammar work as advised in the course in order to give the students a firmer grounding in english. The students believe that 2 hours a week conversation with a native speaker will be sufficient to improve their english quickly but, living in spain, and not being exposed to english all the time means they forget most of the material covered in the lessons if they are not given structured activities and a clear progression from lesson to lesson. Finally, the importance of always speaking english is grea advice. As the coursebook says, it is important to explain to students that this is a deliberate strategy and the reasons behind it. If not they just think you are being stubborn or you don´t know how to speak their language!
