Teaching efl in a Kindergarten (34) We are teachers by trade. Raised by an entrepreneur and a teacher made us lean more toward teaching. Teaching Kindergarten is a lot easier. Kindergarten students are easier to teach and influence. Aside from their innocence, they are uncorrupted. Their oral ability, particularly their pronunciation are enhanced at a very young age. Because of these facts, confidence as an english language speakers are more likely to happen as a result in learning efl in such a young age. We believe the less inhibition there is the greater the motivation. Adults, on the other hand deals a lot in life that would impact their attitude about learning efl. The need to know language attitude, for whatever reason they may have, their mind is more set and made up to why they want to learn efl. Some may regard or look for fun ways of exposure by learning when it's fun and quitting when they feel bored. Some might lack listening, speaking or may even be their literate skills. The thought of being branded as the dumb one in class may hold them from speaking and participating. Sure, as an adult and an educator, we have to consider the implications of being an adult. We are aware that adults have accumulated a longer lifetime of knowledge and experiences that affect our learning abilities. Adults might come to the new learning with more preconceived ideas, stronger opinions and possibly a (subconsciously maybe) resistance to change BUT it is never too late to teach an old dog a new trick as they say. True life's story is that “learning is learning.” and there is not much difference between the way adults learn and the way children do except that children look upon teachers as a figure of authority more so to an adult learning efl. As educators, we think deeply about teaching and actually teach something to our students. I (Aida) have dealt with children more than adults, while Sean mainly taught young adults. Both require patience, understanding and a boat load of preparation if you want to make sure the students are getting something in the class. We strongly BELIEVE that everyone, young or adult has the potential to learn. We as individuals learn in different ways, depending on preferences, abilities, interests and learning styles. Learning can take place through daily routines in our daily lives like questioning, exploring, problem solving and experimenting. Continues learning occurs by acquiring skills and knowledge. Learning is continually active and social and can be best if it takes place through collaboration and regular interaction. Learning takes place when we feel valued and secure. Learning need to be felt like it is challenging, purposeful, meaningful and VERY engaging. We recently opened an esl Need assessment school in partnership with a local school in Vientiane as a way to test an American based curriculum proven to work for native speakers but the question still remain if the same curriculum will work as an esl/efl. We did everything we know how to teach english. We've always known for esl/efl students, learners need to see, hear, write or feel for a satisfying result in learning english language. From hands on centers to playing-while-learning activities, it is very rewarding to see (and apply) what we have learned on this course. We couldn't ask for a better help from a great source.
