As a native english speaker, I rarely think about little grammatical points when I speak, read or write. I don't recall ever having to pause and think about whether pizza is a countable or uncountable noun, or whether I should use present perfect or past perfect tense. From this course, I realized how difficult the english language is for english learners. In the past, when my friends from different countries asked me why would I say a certain sentence this way and not another way, my answer was simply, because that's what sounds right. From this course, I am now able to explain to them grammatically why that sentence is correct. This will help me when teaching students; I can know explain to them specific grammatical points and the reason it is said that way. From this tefl course, I have acquired a strong foundation in english grammar and phonology.
Secondly, this course has equipped me with various teaching skills. I now have a better understanding of methods and ways I should teach in order to maximize the students learning. I've learned various things that a teacher should know. Such as classroom management skills, lesson planning, selecting appropriate course book and activity for students. This course has allowed me to reflect on different teaching methods, and which one fits with my personal teaching philosophy.
With a tefl certificate, I hope to teach english abroad in countries such as hong kong, japan, or Taiwan. I hope to share my culture with these students, and learn about their culture at the same time. Personally, I would prefer to teach elementary aged children in a public school. Nonetheless, I would also be interested in teaching individual adult students or small group lessons to workers.
