Unit 5 is about management within the classroom. The relationship between teacher and student is an important factor in classes that has been brought up in past units. This message is echoed in unit 5. The teachers responsibility is to be a dominate figure within the classroom but not overwhelming. Students behavior can have an effect upon the classroom as a whole and problem behavior can be avoided with easy steps by the teacher. These steps are largely passive in the form of maintaining control of the classroom as a whole by not focusing upon any one student. This unit explains how eye contact can be used in the classroom in a positive way (to get students attention) but can has its negatives too (too much eye contact implies staring). This easy and simple gesture can have a lot of meaning with conveying a message from teacher to student. Later the unit mentions how class formation has an effect upon how students interact in the class and what opportunities those formations give to them. Whole class involvement allows for students to interact with classmates so that students talking time increases a lot. However it can be a problem for shy students or for those that are low ability. Pair work is mentioned to have a dramatic effect upon the amount of student interaction. It allows for students to share ideas with another
