Examinations are a necessity in any class. All of the types of formal evaluation discussed in this section serve different purposes. Placement and Diagnostic tests help a teacher evaluate the starting point for a class allowing them to set the difficulty of lessons to an appropriate difficulty. Progress can be monitored subjectively by the teacher but formal examination helps solidify these observations onto paper. External exams give students validity beyond the institution that they are studying in. Allowing them to take the results with them and have them recognized worldwide. Finally reflective questions to the students on lessons help teachers better understand their own strengths and weaknesses.
