This unit discusses the necessity and types of student evaluation. Tests and other forms of feedback allow both the teacher and the students to measure progress and identify areas of weakness. Progress tests for example can reveal structures and vocabulary that have not yet been fully absorbed by students. This can aid the instructor in deciding what to include in subsequent lessons. There are also external tests which some students may wish to pass in order to enter a university or get employed in an english speaking country. Practice tests may be utilized by teachers to prepare students for such formal testing. This unit suggests that informal group activities or games can be used to conduct progress tests. I would like to attempt this type of evaluation in my own class because I have some students who do not do well on tests despite having ability in english. Perhaps a less formal test would allow them to recognize their own progress.
