I have gained an abundance of great information and insight into the tefl methods and techniques. Before taking this course, I was a little unfamiliar and uncomfortable when answering questions that had to do with things like teaching methods, classroom management, discipline problems, etc. After studying these lessons for the last few months I feel as if I have a new confidence and as well as effective resources going forward. Having never done any formal teaching, I believe that this class has given me a pretty good idea of what I need to do in my many roles as a teacher in the classroom. There were some units, or parts of the units, that I found most helpful or interesting. At the beginning, was some very useful information about the roles of the teacher. I always thought of the teacher as more of the classroom manager and controller. There are many other roles that are just as important but looked over. Some of these are as a model of the language, a resource, facilitator, and observer. These might not be as obvious to someone who does not have experience in teaching. Another area that I found to be very interesting was the unit on classroom management. I never realized how important things like the teacher's voice, posture, use of eye contact, and gestures could be if used strategically. The teacher can also manage the classroom by the use of the board, group work, and classroom arrangement. When it comes to discipline and behavior problems, I learned very useful information that I know I'll be using. It was to see what the factors and reasons are that can affect problem behavior, as well as ways to prevent it and respond to it. Much of this has to do with establishing rapport between the students and with them. This subject was covered in many different areas throughout the lessons. A lot of these issues were illustrated perfectly in the video. It showed a class that was very poorly orchestrated, compared to a class where the teacher was very organized and engaging. It was really beneficial to be able to watch this video and see clear examples of what I had been reading about. There were other units that I found to be extremely helpful in the areas of teaching, methods, and resources. The units on ESA and lesson planning were some of the most important. It really gave me a way to think about how to approach a lesson with a goal in mind and a way of accomplishing that goal. The units even provided multiple teaching ideas for each stage. There was a lot of practice with lesson planning, so I do feel comfortable creating them now. Other methodologies in the same unit were very informative. The units on tense, form, and usage were very useful too. Although I had used these rules for years unconsciously, it was very interesting to see how specific they were. I felt similarly about equipment used in the classroom. Although I know of most of the objects used, I did not know that there was so much thought behind what to use and when. I plan to take all of what I have learned in this course and hopefully apply it in the classroom in the near future. I have applied for teaching jobs in a foreign country in the past year, and I hope that this certification can assist me in landing a job teaching middle school students in South Korea. I am also still trying to figure out what I want to go to graduate school for, and it's a possibility that I may find something in esl.
