The majority of English teaching jobs in Costa Rica are located in the big cities such as San Jose and in the other towns and cities of the Central Valley Area. For many people large South American cities can be daunting, busy and dangerous to the newcomer. Jobs also exist in the coastal areas which have a high concentration of population and you may be lucky enough to find employment which is situated in a beach location or in a smaller town. Competition for such jobs is fierce and it may take a long period of time before you are able to secure a position there. Teachers are recruited from May to September so language teachers are in high demand at this time. From November to the middle of January the demand is not so high but there remains a healthy requirement for teachers throughout the year. With perseverance your chances of obtaining an English teaching job are good at any time of year.

Native Costa Ricans, in common with people all over the world, see a good grasp of the English language as a stepping stone to obtaining a better job and improving their career prospect and rates of pay. There are therefore many language schools in Costa Rica to meet this demand. Most offer a complete range of English courses throughout the year.

The tendency of the majority of schools is to employ teachers based in Costa Rica as it is the Latin American style to see the applicant in person to better obtain an overall impression. Postings on all major TEFL job sites do still exist online and in online copies of local newspapers.

Most schools do not provide their own training so it is important to have undergone TEFL training in order to gain good employment. Important criteria for hiring include a TEFL certificate, university degree, a good personality and a smart dress code.
