The Country

As the fifth most populated county in the world, Indonesia can often give the impression that all of its inhabitants are learning English at the same time. Jobs teaching English therefore abound, ranging from the state to the private sector. The highest demand for teachers of English is in the capital city of Java, but there is also a healthy demand for TEFL teachers throughout the many islands comprising this country.

Indonesia has flexible teaching requirements, but the need for a TEFL certificate from a recognised TEFL course is a universal requirement by the government to be able to issue a work visa. The need for a university degree is not essential as most schools place a higher emphasis on a willingness to work constructively and a sense of humour.

The cost of living in Indonesia is very low and therefore the average pay for a TEFL teacher can stretch a long way, however, saving may be difficult.

Indonesia provides an ideal situation in which to start your TEFL career but jobs are lower paid than in other Asian countries. Always check any verbal offer of employment against the written terms of the contract before committing to a job. Also check web chat sites and notice boards for details of any vacancies, as is the case for obtaining TEFL employment in any country. Many schools will offer the further option of providing a housing allowance in addition to, or instead of, providing housing. In all cases you are advised to personally inspect housing before accepting it. To enter Indonesia you will need to buy a return air ticket 50% of which is returned to you by your school within 3 months and the remainder at the end of your term of employment. You are also advised to check the terms of your contract, such as your hours of work and you should only choose a job which requires you to be flexible in this respect if you are actually prepared to stick to it.

Sample Job offer for Teaching English in Indonesia

"We are seeking TEFL qualified native English speakers to teach classes to children and adults at a variety of levels. Class sizes are limited to 14 students with the average being 10 students per class. All teachers are provided with a comprehensive syllabus, including lesson plans for each course and level. Our teachers are encouraged to adapt the course materials to meet the students learning styles. The school has an extensive resource centre and library to assist teachers in preparing additional or adapted materials.

We are looking for TEFL certified teachers who hold a recognised TEFL certificate (such as ITTT). Previous teaching experience preferred but not required. More important is a flexible character, which can adapt to life in a developing tropical country. Candidates with enthusiasm, a positive attitude and a sense of humour are particularly sought.

In return for teaching 25 contact hours per week and 15 office hours per week, TEFL qualified teachers will receive 8,000,000 Rupiah per month, return airfare from their current location, full working visa, 14 days holiday every 12 months plus national holidays, health insurance, accommodation shared with fellow teachers and opportunities for career development."
