The Country

TEFL job opportunities are plentiful in Italy throughout the whole country, with many cities having more demand for teachers than supply. This means that in nearly every city a suitably qualified TEFL teacher should secure employment without much trouble. A lot of teachers thrive on the energetic and open lifestyle that is uniquely Italian in spite of the fact that salaries are quite low when compared to the cost of living. Italy is a member of the EU and therefore native English and Irish teachers are preferred. There are, however, numerous English teaching jobs which are also available to non EU citizens.

Qualified TEFL teachers have an excellent opportunity to obtain work in Italy as work opportunities abound in the larger cities including Rome, Turin, Milan, Florence and Bologna. There is also a huge demand for English teachers throughout the south of the country.

Most teaching institutions in Italy start their courses in September when the summer holiday has ended, with enrolments lasting throughout October. The academic year ends in May or June meaning that most teaching employment lasts for nine or ten months. The prime period in which to seek and apply for employment is from February onwards. By this time schools have a good idea of their student numbers and class sizes for the forthcoming academic year. Last minute applications can also be made in September and October as many schools will have a high demand for new teachers at the start of the academic year.

Adverts for teaching positions in Italy can be seen on nearly all of the numerous TEFL web sites which should be checked on a regular basis. We would advise you to search previous postings online and also to note school contact details. To boost the number of job opportunities available visit language school directories and online business publications, such as the white pages. Also try to follow up any online contact with a phone call. Perseverance is the name of the game to successfully finding a teaching job in Italy. Please also remember that, because Italy is a top destination for English teachers, competition for the best jobs is intense.
