Holders of ITTT Certificates will find that there are many English teaching jobs available to them in Japan. In the larger cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, demand for English teachers is greater than supply and demand is good throughout the entire country. Japanese culture dictates that teachers are given a high degree of respect meaning that students are inevitably motivated and show a great willingness to learn. A BA or BS degree is required for any work permit in Japan so employment opportunities are solely for graduates. Levels of pay are high and are generally in the region of 70,000 yen per month (this equates to USD$580). It must be said that there are many opportunities to supplement your income in Japan by also giving lessons on a private basis.
A great number of major Japanese businesses employ English language teachers on a large scale. Terms of employment vary between different companies so we would recommend that you carry out some independent research and seek answers to pertinent questions before reaching a final decision. Such questions may include; may I see a copy of the contract ?, what will be my working hours and how flexible will they be ?, do you have your own course materials or will I be expected to use my own ?, do you provide housing or offer housing assistance ?, do the terms of my employment include health insurance ? Most schools in Japan see it as an advantage if their teachers are outgoing and have a good sense of humour.
