We would strongly advise any teacher of English in the Philippines to assess your employment options prior to traveling there. Whilst it is true that the majority of prospective employers will ask to interview you in person, it is advisable that you still set up any interviews in advance from home. Foreigners may encounter difficulty in obtaining English teaching positions in the Philippines because many nationals of this country have the qualifications to fill the positions. It will be an advantage if you are a USA citizen and the majority of employment is offered in larger businesses, language and international schools. It is highly likely that in the international schools you will be teaching students who are from Korea and Japan.
Some government and privately run schools that employ foreigners and native English speakers do exist, but by far the majority of opportunities will be with large multi-national companies, international schools and language schools in the big cities such as Manila. If your preference is for a more personal and cultural experience there are always volunteer positions in the remoter areas and islands which make up this diverse country. To obtain English teaching employment a university degree in addition to TEFL or equivalent certificate are mandatory. Many employers will also ask for a specifically relevant area of academic study.
