The Country
Poland is a well-established location with a reputation for a wealth of English language teaching jobs and probably has the most opportunities of any country in its region, if not the world. Employment is available throughout the country in all sectors. Salaries are relatively high when compared to the local standard of living and English language teachers will therefore be able to live comfortably. In most countries in this region saving is difficult but in Poland your income can be supplemented with private lessons.
Jobs are continually posted all year on the various EFL job web sites. Work can therefore easily be found provided you take a forward thinking approach to your search for a job by personally contacting schools in the areas in which you may be interested in. Contact details can be obtained by visiting web based language school and business directories. The majority of employers will ask that applicants possess a university degree in addition to a TEFL certificate to be considered for a job.
Contracts for employment are usually of one year duration unless a position is applied for part way through the academic year. A curriculum for the year is usually provided by the employer which is split into terms and then weeks. There is usually some degree of flexibility to these curriculums in that teachers may adapt the content of a lesson to meet the requirements of their particular students. It must be said that Polish students generally have a healthy admiration for their teachers and are personable and motivated.
The greatest number of English language teaching job vacancies can be found in the major cities of Poland where the increased population and work force pushes up demand. Poland joined the EU in 2004 and, since that date, demand has gone up even further. Our experience is that, should Poland prove to be your destination for teaching English after your TEFL course, you will experience very few difficulties in finding employment relatively quickly.
