Taiwan holds the key to a wealth of EFL teaching opportunities for those who hold a university degree, as well as a TEFL certificate and are native English speakers. The pay is good, cost of living low and working conditions are acceptable. Private schools in Taiwan are called bushibans. There are hundreds of these private schools throughout the country and most teaching positions are to be found here. Most students in Taiwan are young but jobs teaching adults also exist. The average Taiwanese individual will welcome the opportunity to interact with people from overseas as they are warm and friendly by nature.

Be wary of intermediate agencies offering job opportunities in Taiwan because what they promise they can often not deliver on. In every instance insist upon receiving a written contract from any prospective employer and scrutinise it thoroughly. Do not be afraid to ask any questions regarding the terms of employment such as hours, dates, rate of pay, holidays, payment for flights, accommodation arrangements, medical benefits, employment completion date, bonuses and visa requirements. Jobs paid on an hourly basis usually provide the opportunity to earn more than full-time salaried employment as you will have more free time in which to arrange extra lessons but you will not receive holiday pay. We would advise that you make every attempt to find private students to bolster your income. Opportunities also exist in Taiwan for those people who have passed an associate degree from a recognised teaching institution in addition to having attended a recognised TEFL course. Many schools in Taiwan are huge with multiple locations offering a wide variety of English teaching jobs. We advise you to keep an eye on forums and run web searches for any additional information required.

 

 

Sample Job offer for Teaching English in Taiwan

"Seeking experienced and first time TEFL teachers at our highly respected English language schools throughout Taiwan. Classes are delivered at one of our many schools in Taiwan (so no traveling between lessons). Students are between 3-12 years old. Syllabus, lesson plans and materials are provided. Contract hours are 8:30Am - 4:30Pm teaching 26 classroom hours per week. In order to qualify you must be a native English speaker from Canada, USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, be able to commit to a one-year contract, hold a bachelor’s degree with certification as proof. Preference will be given to holders of internationally recognised TEFL certifications, such as ITTT.

You will receive a monthly salary of between 62,000 - 67,000NT depending on qualifications and experience, health insurance, 2 weeks paid holiday plus all national holidays, sick pay and medical insurance, subsidised accommodation, contract completion bonus, return airfare, airport pick up and lunch and dinner at the school."
