The Country

Thailand currently has a wide diversity of employment opportunities for EFL teachers. In Bangkok and the major coastal tourist locations, current demand for teachers is in fact bigger than supply. Other areas of the country also afford good employment opportunities as all state schools employ at least one native English language speaking teacher. Thai students have a high regard for their teachers as Thai culture dictates the following order of respect; King, monk, teacher and then parents. Students are therefore usually very eager to learn. Thailand is undoubtedly one of the most sought after destinations in South East Asia and for this reason many unqualified teachers try to ply their trade here and set up sub-standard teaching schools. TEFL certified individuals will however find work easy to come by here. Salaries are relatively low but are balanced by the cost of living which is also low.

Usually the minimum standards to be met to teach English in this country are a university degree in any subject and a TEFL certificate from an internationally recognised organisation such as ITTT. Ours is the sole certificate which is recognised by the Ministry of Education in Thailand.

Obtaining a further qualification in a related area of work can usually help a teacher secure a higher wage but is not a standard requirement for most employers. The easiest way to search for teaching employment in Thailand is to physically be there. Many institutions across the board will only hire those who they can meet and interview in person. Job opportunities abound in Thailand and are very easy to come by in the numerous schools located throughout the country. Beware of some sub-standard schools of the type mentioned above. Their role is more akin to that of an agent and you could be taken advantage of. Visa and work permit requirements in this country dictate that you must have your original educational certificates so be sure to bring them with you.
