The Country

The larger cities in Turkey offer a huge variety of opportunities for EFL teachers although jobs are in good supply throughout the country. Wages are good and the cost of living is lower than in most of Europe, meaning that teachers find living in this country a warm and enjoyable experience. Many of the good jobs are based in the private educational sector and a university degree is a standard requirement.

The minimum wage level in Turkey according to the law is approximately USD$450 per month, although EFL teachers are on average paid almost twice this amount. Members of the growing Turkish middle class provide an ever increasing demand for EFL teachers, ideally from native English speaking countries with demand far outstripping supply. A large number of schools in the capital Istanbul teach adult students exclusively. It is much easier to find employment in one of these schools as opposed to the primary schools. Because of this it is common for EFL teachers in Turkey to work in the evenings and/or at the weekends. This leaves teachers with free time during the day to explore and experience Turkish culture. The other major cities in Turkey such as Ankara and Izmir also have many language schools.

Most schools in Turkey request that their teacher employees stay for a minimum of one year. A teacher with advanced qualifications (such as an MA in TESOL, linguistics or education) or existing practical teaching experience will be able to find a well-paid teaching job in a public university without much difficulty. These are the most highly regarded jobs within the Turkish academic system so competition is intense. If you simply hold a degree but have no formal EFL training we would strongly advise that you sign up for one of our 4 week TEFL courses.
