During the summer months it is estimated that there are in excess of 800 summer schools offering intensive summer school programs in the UK. There are also many positions available for EFL teachers all year round. The fact that many EFL teachers return to the UK after gaining experience abroad, together with the reality that many teachers in the UK have advanced qualifications, makes competition for employment intense and a degree of determination is therefore required to obtain employment in the UK.
Payment is usually on an hourly or class basis and averages GBP 14 per hour. EU passport holders and UK nationals are preferred but employment opportunities also exist for non-EU citizens via the Student Work Abroad Program. The cost of living in the UK (especially London) is high and EFL teachers find it increasingly hard to survive comfortably by working in a language school alone. We would advise that you seek private lessons to supplement your income.
Thousands of EFL students converge on the UK during the summer months of July and August to attend summer holiday language camps where study of the English language is combined with leisure activities and sightseeing tours. Summer teaching positions are paid at the rate of up to GBP 300 per week. Employment in such jobs is frequently inclusive of accommodation and food. Job vacancies are advertised well in advance of the summer, often as early as February, with schools continuing to take on teaching staff right through to July and August.
