The emphasis in the USA is on teaching English as a second language and most jobs are offered to US citizens through universities and colleges in major cities. Many cities also have language schools, most notably in the South and particularly in California. Many opportunities also exist for non-US citizens but unless applicants have a green card most job opportunities will largely be limited to those offered on a volunteer basis. In the USA the majority of teaching jobs are offered on a part-time basis and require the applicant to hold a teaching related degree and/or have relevant practical experience. TEFL teachers in the USA are paid a relatively low salary on an hourly basis. Generally it is an advantage for teachers to also speak Spanish to a reasonably proficient standard so that bilingual classes can be taught, as well as English classes where students may only have a small understanding of English.

The fairly stringent requirements outlined above means that there are always a great variety of ESL teaching jobs on offer in the USA as they are difficult to fill. The demand for ESL teachers is increasing at the same time. The various volunteer programs scattered throughout the country do not have such prohibitive requirements and taking such a position will provide you with the job satisfaction of helping those less fortunate than yourself, whilst at the same time giving you much needed practical experience thereby enhancing your career prospects. It is our experience that as English is the first language in the USA the availability of resources for teaching is huge. This is of great advantage to those ESL teachers who wish to work in the USA, but also necessitates that you prepare thoroughly for classes in advance paying particular attention to detail. If you embrace the American culture and enjoy being surrounded by the English language you will be in a better position to understand the requirements of your students and fulfil them through your teaching.

Sample Job offer for Teaching English in USA

"Our English program seeks ESL instructors for year-round positions at a College in Rancho Palos Verdes. Our company operates Intensive English Programs on college and university campuses across the United States. ESL classes are offered in 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 hour sessions from Monday-Friday. Teachers must have a minimum of a MA in TESL, English, Education, Linguistics or a related field and one year of teaching experience. Preferred qualifications include overseas teaching experience, study abroad experience and experience in a multi-cultural environment. A full curriculum is provided. Teachers will work with students aged 16+ from a variety of countries. Rates of pay vary from $18.00 - $20.00 per hour."
