A long war and period of cultural unrest in Vietnam have now been surpassed by a period of stability and economic growth in the past decade. The country has therefore opened up to international influences on a large scale and the demand for TEFL teachers has also grown. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), the Eastern seaport city of Da Nang and the cultural capital Hanoi provide the hotbed of teaching opportunities, although superb chances of securing a well-paid job also exist in other areas and cities throughout the country. Salaries are good compared to the relatively low cost of living, although you may find that jobs outside of the big cities are on a volunteer basis only. If this is your preference there are a number of agencies that can assist you finding volunteer teaching work.

TEFL teachers who come to this country with an open attitude and appreciation of cultural differences will be rewarded with a warm reception as teachers are paid the highest levels of respect in Vietnamese society. The Vietnamese have a similar saying to the Thais when it comes to ranking social order: ‘My King, my teacher, my father’. Students are usually eager and attentive and will want to get to know you. Many Vietnamese people see the ability to use the English language as integral to the improvement of their future career.

In our opinion, the best way to find employment in Vietnam is to travel to the country. Obtaining information prior to departure is also advised but the best way to seek employment is to take your Curriculum Vitae with you to Vietnam and apply for posts in person, initially to those schools you have researched. You should dress to impress and in some instances a school may arrange for you to take a trial class. TEFL teaching jobs are also readily available if you socialise with other teachers in Vietnam and find out from local people where job opportunities are.

The school offers a strong commitment to professional development and high teaching standards. Salary: 1160 USD - 1500 USD per month, depending on qualifications and experience. Medical insurance allowance: 550 USD per year. Flight allowance: 500 USD per year (paid at the end of contract). Bonus: End of year bonus is paid at $1 per hour taught during the year. 20 working days paid annual leave and an additional 8 paid days off for national holidays."
