Classroom management is a term teachers use to describe the process of ensuring that classroom lessons run smoothly without disruptive behavior from students compromising the delivery of instruction. The term also implies the prevention of disruptive behavior preemptively, as well as effectively responding to it after it happens. It is a difficult aspect of teaching for many teachers. Problems in this area causes some to leave teaching. Why is classroom management important? *Establishes and sustains an orderly environment in the classroom. *Increases meaningful academic learning and facilitates social and emotional growth. *Decreases negative behaviors and increases time spent academically engaged. Chaotic classroom environments are a large issue for teachers and can contribute to high teacher stress and burnout rates. Therefore, it is important to use effective classroom management strategies at the universal level in a tiered model, as they serve as both prevention and intervention methods that promote positive outcomes for students. Classroom management systems are effective because they increase student success by creating an orderly learning environment that enhances students' academic skills and competencies, as well as their social and emotional development. Classroom management systems are most effective when they adhere to three basic principles: 1. Emphasize student expectations for behavior and learning. 2. Promote active learning and student involvement. 3. Identify important student behaviors for success. More specifically: a. What behaviors are required to reach the goals of learning activities? b. What implications does a particular learning activity have for student roles? c. How will the teacher prepare students to take on these roles? Teachers concerned with classroom management typically need help with two issues: 1. Preventing discipline problems. 2. Dealing with current discipline problems. New teachers often buy into the myth that the ability to manage a classroom is an inherent trait. Teachers can acquire the skills necessary to successfully manage a classroom. Students are hardwired to test their teacher, but they want the teacher to pass the test. If the teacher has built a positive reputation for the student, and if the student senses the teacher believes in them, and then the teacher is disappointed in them, that can be jarring. Expect that some students will test you by misbehaving. When they do, isolate the tester, not yourself. It's important to stay united with the rest of the class. Praise can be used to transform a student's image, uplift the entire class, and reinforce the values you seek to promote in your classroom. When praising students, it's important to be specific and encourage behavior that's repeatable. Establish a classroom culture in which students are required to respect one another. Teachers should never tolerate mocking, cruelty, impatience or disrespect directed to a classmate. Speaking is a critical life skill, and it only improves with practice. Inform students early on that they will be expected to participate every day. Offering positive feedback about a student's comment can encourage future participation, particularly among shy students. Discipline often comes to mind at the mention of classroom management, but the crucial component of teaching is much more. Classroom management creates a set of expectations used in an organized classroom environment. It includes routines, rules and consequences. Effective classroom management paves the way for the teacher to engage the students in learning. For a class to be able to learn effectively the teacher must be able to inspire confidence in the students. We must know when to be firm and when to leave the students alone. Good eye contact in the classroom is essential to establishing good rapport with the students. A teacher who never looks students in the eye will appear to lack confidence and could then have problems with discipline. On the other hand, staring at students is not very productive either. Teachers do not focus on learning classroom management, because higher education programs do not put an emphasis on the teacher attaining classroom management; indeed, the focus is on creating a conducive learning atmosphere for the student. These tools enable teachers to have the resources available to properly and successfully educate upcoming generations, and ensure future success as a nation.
