Teaching children can be one of the most rewarding experiences a teacher can have. Children are naturally curious and eager to learn, especially when placed in a positive learning environment. As a teacher, priority one is guiding and motivating these young people and to provide a positive experience which will set the pace for future learning. As a teacher, there are several factors to consider while creating this positive experience: the setting, the lesson, and how to manage the class. The first thing to consider is the setting. The classroom setting itself is a pivotal factor in ensuring children have a positive experience. Atmosphere is commonly overlooked but should not be neglected, especially by teachers of children. The students should feel warm and welcome in the class. Plain or sterile classrooms will bore children and have a negative effect on their motivation and perhaps make them feel uncomfortable. It is important that the teacher take time to consider how they can spice up their classroom in order to provide a fun and interesting atmosphere for the children. Posters, cartoons, and even the children’s own artwork are great ways to do this. Next, the teacher should consider how the lesson will be taught. A simple rule of thumb is to keep lessons fun, varied, and well paced. This will keep the lessons interesting and the children engaged. Having the children perform activities such as drawing and coloring are easy ways to provide added engagement. Other ways might include playing short games. Games have the added benefit of competition and teamwork and gives children the feeling of accomplishment when they win. Teachers should always reward hard work by praising the children or providing them with simple rewards like stickers or a piece of candy. The final factor to consider in creating a positive classroom experience is classroom management. Classroom management could be defined as how the teacher manages children in the classroom and particularly how the teacher deals with disruptive behavior when it arises. Children are full of energy, so it is inevitable that problems may come up from time to time. Other reasons problems may arise include problems at home, boredom, peer pressure, craving attention, and even lack of consistency from the teacher themselves. It is important for the teacher to be aware of these issues and not take discipline problems personally. The teacher should always show a patient and kind demeanor when dealing with children and absolutely never issue threats, raise their voice, or inflicting harm on a child! This doesn’t mean that the teacher cannot be firm and enforce disciplinary actions when necessary. In fact, it’s often much easier to start firm and lessen control rather than battle for control in the class later. In conclusion, teaching children can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a teacher’s career. Following this path comes with a unique set of challenges and difficulties, but also holds many rewards. If the teacher comes into the experience aware of the challenges, they will be much more prepared to deal with them as they arise. This will make a wonderful experience for both themselves and the children they teach.
