English is one of the most widely spoken languages and plays an essential part in the global dialogue. This is primarily because English speaking countries played large parts in the development of the modern world dating back colonization by the then British Empire and has continued today through the prominence of Hollywood and American music stars. Much of the popular culture in the world today stems from musicians and movies from America and are shown and broadcast all over the world. These artists include people like Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Leonardo DiCaprio among high-profile movie actors and Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Adele among high-profile musicians. Just to engage in the culture and understanding the ideas that are coming out of the United States is a large portion of why people should try to learn English although each individual country has their own local musicians and actors. Learning English gives students commonalities with other around the globe in being able to express themselves and immerse themselves in the popular culture, give critiques, and utilize the ideas in their own art, business or, culture. In the field of the sciences the most notable papers are published in English journals such as Nature, Science, and others and are therefore the scientific journals in which every scientist strives to have their works published. This requires a great understanding of the English language to be able to communicate across country boarders and with the international community in both science, math, and engineering. The science field requires the ability to express their ideas in long form at an international conference or in a three-minute speech when applying for grants or scientific funding from either a private or governmental body. The utilization of the proper technologies also requires English because the most notable, high-end equipment manufacturers are all international companies that operate all around the globe. In the world of business, it is important to learn the English language because the most successful companies were started by English speakers. These are companies like Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Twitter which are tech-giants that provide services to people on a global scale. If an individual were to work for one of these companies in the computer security side of the business, they would need to know English to be able to write the computer software because the commands in the software is written in English. It would be of great benefit to them to be able to understand the line of code and why it has the specific function that is does based on the internal logic of the computer. English is also important for understanding world events. At present, America controls much of the world stage and global politics is a reaction or critique of much of what the United States is doing. This could be covering anything from the latest statement from the White House, snide comments from a reporter or politician, or newly adopted legislation or policy concerning other countries. Learning English would allow students to understand different world stage events through different perspectives, one from their own countries and those through the eyes of the British, America, and Australia which would allow them to come to a more complete picture to make their own decisions. All in all there are many reasons to learn English. Some are professional, some are cultural, and some are political but through understanding English it can make a more cohesive world and allow more people to engage on the world stage and make a difference.
